Black box now mandatory on new vehicles in EU
July 2022

New vehicles sold in the EU are now required to have various items of new equipment installed; among the most important is a black box, similar to that installed in aircraft. With the progress of homologations relating to constantly developing driving aids this new measure has been enacted in EU law. Thus, from 6 July 2022, all new vehicles are to be equipped with a black box that which will record various types of data during phases of driving; acceleration, speed, braking, seat belt use and the use of headlights and turn signals will be archived in the system for one minute. The black box joins a number of other connected systems that new cars are required to fit to maintain safety standards, among them tyre pressure monitoring systems.

…but we are not in the EU and Liz is going to scrap all the remaining EU laws…
Presumably if they can make a car right hand drive for UK, they can delete the “black box” if it means selling more cars?
Not really bothered either way to be honest 🤔

Don't think UK has adopted it just yet - but probably will. Expect insurance companies will begin offering deals for cars fitted ... or more likely charge hire premiums for 'older' cars of a certain performance.

I wonder if it will log your Spotify tracks? If so would that mean that after an accident in court if you were listening to the prodigy smack my bitch up you’d come of worse than someone listening to the carpenters close to you? Now there’s a thought for the day.
Joking aside I’m sure this infringes on some human rights somewhere, I get it if you work behind the wheel.

I'm not sure if it would affect premiums for the over 25s that much. Location, previous driver accidents, penalties and miles driven must account for 95% of the premium.

Regarding the comment on Human Rights, that’s typical of the EU. Aren’t they big on those rights, but when it comes to doing what they want, those rights don’t seem to apply.
In fact the EU are after us again, for not complying with their legislation.
But I did read somewhere that the UK was considering adopting this big brother technology.

Absolutely, applied rules when It suits, when the level of control over the sheeple can be increased and when money can be made.

That’s the problem though. All those are “recorded” things. Currently you we can drive like a bunch of spanners and it only impacts our insurance if we’re caught doing it. If there’s someone watching you all the time then your insurance will go through the roof. I used to work with a young girl that had an insurance black box fitted and she actually got a warning from her insurance company saying that if she didn’t moderate her driving style they’d cancel her insurance. She had no points, no fines and had never been pulled-over but the black box was always watching. If she did have her insurance cancelled that would definitely increase her premiums. That will happen to all of us, irrespective of age, location, points, milage driven etc.
