Running in, please pass?

Never thought I'd find myself asking such a question in 2022, but here we are.

With the arrival of my S now looking possible by mid June, and a trip away with the caravan planned for July, I need to consider whether any 'running in' of the engine/box should be completed before hitching 1400kg on the back and dragging it 300 miles.

Having read various references to running in periods, I'm none the wiser as to what exactly is recommended (or for how long/far), and whether any of it is actually required in order to comply with Porsche requirements.

Any thoughts or pointers, particularly to 'official' advice, would be greatly appreciated.

I always understood that you didn't overrev or let the engine labour whilst running in. If you keep the revs in the 1500 to 3000 range you will be fine

Official advice is available in the Good to Know app (and you will be able to find the relevant extract replicated on this forum). I think it applies for the first 1800 miles or so.

It’s advisory - not a specific requirement. But an important thing to do.

I would have thought it wise to complete at least some, preferably all, of the running in period before towing.

Not so straight forward when towing. The 'box will select the most appropriate cog for the situation, and towing 1400kg up a steep, twisting B-road (for example) may see it hold a lower gear at higher revs than would adhere to your suggestion.

I would try to "run in" / "take it easy" for at least 500 miles

If this is not possible I wouldn't worry too much and just "take it easy with the caravan attached" (drive normally )
