My 2017 Macan SD came with a very nice set of Gen 2 20" Turbo alloys. Over half worn, but still legal.

The ride was quite harsh and I decided to downsize prior to a road trip to the Scottish Highlands. I came across a set of 18" Macan alloys online with nearly new Michelin Cross Climate tyres.
Yes, I am well aware that they are not Porsche approved, but I was already an advocate for these fantastic tyres, both summer and winter use. Had them on a previous car and even stuck a full set on my son's car the week he passed his driving test.

Firstly, the tyres really suit the car and were fantastic on hundreds of miles of minor and single track roads in Scotland.

But, regarding the wheel/tyre change, I have followed the forum advice and changed wheel sizes on the dash then tried to let the car reset the tpms system.

Having tried to reset the system dozens of times over more than 1000 miles, it constantly tells me I need a tpms service.

So, the car is 5 years old, out of warranty and I'm reluctant to visit the main dealer unless I have to.

Tried a tyre depot and the manager informs me the tpms sensors need to be removed from the 20" wheels and fitted to the 18" items as they are specific to my car.
Asked if an independent Porsche technician can reset the 2nd hand set and he guessed they may be able to be recoded.

I'm not so sure this info is correct.

I promise, I have searched the previous posts so as not to waste your collective time, but can find nothing to help.

So, do I need new sensors? Or is this a software issue?

Main dealer or one of the two local Porsche Independent technicians?

I have two sets of wheels, the 21’s that the car came with and I bought a set of 20’s with winter tyres. When I put the winter wheels on I literally did nothing but change the MFD to 20 inch winters, it picked up the sensors perfectly without any programming.
I have seen the sensors when I had the tyres changed and they are standard VAG. I would conclude that they are not car specific, but new ones may need some sort of coding perhaps? Maybe not though.
They must have batteries in them? So do they simply need changing if the wheels have been standing around for a while?

As Klynie says you need to change the tyre size in the settings in the PCM, I have 2 sets of wheels & run 21” summer wheels & 18” winter tyres, the TPMS are not swapped over whoever suggested this is talking out of their exhaust! A good tyre dealer will have a reader for the TPMS which will tell you if the batteries are still good. Just be aware that once you have changed the tyre size winter/summer setting in the PCM it can take a few miles for it to recognise the change. If after a while it doesn’t see the new wheels. Stop car turn ignition off then on again and reset the size, having moved it off the 18” then back again. Hope this helps.

^^^^ Looks like OP has tried all that many times.

Stevie - Do you know the history of the wheels you bought? Presumable they are ex Macan? Are the valves obviously TPMS valves? At least one member on here had an issue after a tyre fitting outlet failed to refit his original TPMS valves.

I think your first port of call should be a reputable tyre fitting outlet who should do an external check and, if necessary, remove a tyre to identify and check the valve.

Like others, I regularly swapped summer and winter tyres without TPMS issues, although they were supplied and fitted by the OPC. Correct TPMS valves are plug and play though and the car should read them after a few miles.

Hi Nick, sorry but I Missed the first part of Steve’s post due to the slow loading of the site. Most good tyre suppliers have an electronic gizmo that they can scan the tyre valve with to see if they are working & if they are the correct frequency if non OE fit.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I purchased the alloys from a company who specialise in Land Rover alloys. They are indeed genuine Macan fitment and do have the proper looking bolt in type valves consistent with a tpms.

I'm in Northern Ireland and the advice given was from the manager of my local tyre depot. They are the largest retail tyre dealers in Ireland according to their website, with 40 outlets. I know they guy quite well and am surprised he got it so wrong.

Maybe I need to visit quick-fit instead.

Just trying to save a pound or two while keeping the 20" wheels for when I move the car on.

Hi,

I bought a set of 19" wheels for use with WInter Tyres - they are genuine Porsche and had the bolt in valve stems you mentioned so was hopeful the TPMS sensors were already installed. When the tyres were removed though, they were just bolt in valve stems and no sensors - not seen this before.

Bought 4 new sensors - OE-R part number HTS-A69BN (OE and a lot cheaper than from Porsche) and all works fine.

Looks like you might have the bolt in valve stems but no sensors?

Hope that helps.

Cheers, J
