However, what annoys me most, are motorcycle riders splitting lines in a hi-vis jacked and sign “think bike”. How about you think car(!?) for the record, I ride motorcycle, in a leather jacket without hi-vis fashion statement, and stick to my line.
I might regret this, but what’s a cager?
Glad that I am not the only one

Me too. Maybe English is not the first language? I’m a motorcyclist and I don’t know what ‘splitting lines’ means.

Ah, ok, maybe you’ve found the answer Simon. However, in the UK it is called filtering, whether between stationary or moving traffic. It is perfectly legal, and done properly it is safe and allows the motorcyclist to make progress. It’s what a motorcycle is made for! Sadly, some bikers do not do it safely and will antagonise other road users as well as putting themselves at greater risk of injury or worse.

Hi Nick. I mostly notice this when stationary or in very slow moving traffic on a motorway. If I’m in the lane on the right, motorcycle riders often pass on my left, so between lanes 2 and 3, if that makes sense?

Cheers,
Simon

Yes, that’s the most common choice on a three lane or more motorway. It’s safest for bikers when the traffic is stationary, although there’s always the risk of someone opening a door. When traffic is moving riders should filter at a speed only say maximum 10mph above the traffic flow. The greatest risk then is of cars switching lanes. An experienced, and responsible, biker will sense when a car is about to go for a gap and hold back. Cars often make room for filtering bikes and I will always give a wave if they have. I keep an eye on my mirrors too for bikes coming up behind. I’ll let them past as they can then go ahead and ‘wake up’ car drivers to the presence of bikes filtering. The biggest risk to bikes filtering though is when they go up the outside of stationary traffic on a two lane road where an impatient driver might decide to do a rapid u turn without first checking their mirrors. Quite a few bikers have come to grief like this.
