You mean, Roads are not funded by central taxation more like. All we seem to get are things we never asked for like UN-SMART motorways ;)

It’s a vehicle tax based on emissions and value.
It’s been many years since we had a specialist tax - it all goes into one pot either centrally or locally. Remember when NI was to fund the NHS and was ring fenced?
It’s also a tiny proportion of tax take (less than 1%) and one of the few you have a choice about how much you pay. Get an electric car under £40k and don’t pay any.

...for now! ;)

Sorry guyd but road fund tax was reintroduced with the 140 blanket annual charge - cant remember the year, but the monies were ring fenced for 'roads'.....it has been undermined by low emission £0 charge and EVs

According to the BBC…

The VED funds go directly into central government funds and represent around £6.5b per year. There is a proposal on the table (white paper from 2021) to ring fence these funds for “English strategic roads” which is supposed to contribute to road maintenance, new road builds etc.
This proposal is yet to be implemented into UK fiscal process but is expected to be incorporated later this year.

Didn't mean to open a can of worms on here. Just feel that £2015 for 1st year road tax is taking the pee big-time

Indeed, and the government are yet to publish their proposal for replacing this income. Most likely outcome will probably be “tax per mile” solution of some kind 😳

Not sure NI was ever just for NHS? Also as today to cover unemployment and state pension benefit.

Yes you are right, but the point remains, it’s not specific to anything it just goes into central funds so to speak…

Road pricing would be hard to implement. Easy to clone number plates, shield transponders etc. Plus the infrastructure cost. It would work on motorways but that could just force cars off onto the trunk roads as has happened in France.

I think it is more likely to be the current road tax plus a levy at charging stations and a separate meter at home for fast charging sockets with premium / discounted unit rates depending on the time of day.
