Needed to pop into VW dealer in Derby (hire car is a T-Roc) and had a mooch around the showroom. They have a Tiguan R in VW’s version of Gentian blue priced at £48k
Lovely interior with leather and alcantara and with all the convenience features that the Macan lacks (gesture tailgate, matrix lights etc) but also, the quality of interior plastics on the dash and door tops is far superior to the Macan - this was a surprise.
I thought it a viable alternative although not the prestige or looks of the Macan it will be quicker, more practicle and better specced…
The surprise was that this car was one year old with 8k miles on the clock and priced £1.5k over list!!
Will still make a nice motor for someone though.

My father got his Tiguan new back in August (ordered April) . He was lucky to get one, even more so with 5% discount; making his petrol 1.5TSI DSG Elegance around £30k on the road. Loads of standard spec, and its a decent ride on the standard 19" wheels - good boot size, interior space as good as the Macan. Quite sprightly but not in the Macan league, but then he gets 45+mpg economy too. You pay quite a bit extra for the bodykit and other sporty looking bits n bobs on the R spec

Not a competitor to S or GTS, massive performance and refinement shortfall. Evo give Tiguan 3 stars but Macan 4 or 4.5

Yes it absolutely blitzes a base Macan and with 320bhp and a 0-60 of 4.9s I wouldn’t say the performance difference to S and GTS is “massive”, more like marginal 😉

Probably not really but…
You could get the R with a small discount for around £46k - is a base Macan with nothing on it worth £49k?
I was thinking as an alternative to a base Macan really but Porsche still attractive… 🤔

I've owned a Tiguan back when God was a boy and they are perfectly adequate just like the Golf big brother they were designed to be. But it's a VW and a Macan is a Porsche and sadly that's what makes the difference not how good it is.

Having driven a Tiguan (holiday hire) over a few hundred miles, I can say that it does not handle, brake, steer or go as well as a Macan. Adequate but Dull would be the way I describe it. The quality is not as good either.
