Don't feel too depressed as what will a 26 year old be driving when they reach 50. Now that is depressing :(
They might have fled the parents home, and bank of mum/dad by that stage - probably be in a Mondeo
I think motorists will be taxed so heavily by then that car sharing from a central pool of cars will be the norm with a yearly subscription. The more you pay upfront, the bigger the choice. It's not a new idea though but I think it will grow legs in the future. 😢

Other than keeping jobs at the DVLA , I've never understood why they didn't abolish road tax and just put the extra tax on fuel - therefore those doing more miles, in bigger engined cars pay more. The bigger issue now revolves around the loss of road tax from EVs, which will no doubt put the tax/mile concept over the line.

Because this punishes those who have to travel more for work the harshest.

Those who have to travel further for work tend to be those who don't live close to economic centres or metropolitan areas.

Those people tend to also be poorer.

In that scenario, you've got a someone who lives in Knightsbridge, drives a G63 around Chelsea on the weekend and working in the city paying very little. But someone who lives in Kent who has to drive 20 miles each way to get into work in their 10 year old diesel Renault who earns £24k a year paying a lot more.

Policy based on usage makes sense on the surface until you dig into who it disproportionately impacts the most. The point of social systems are to help those who need more help than others so we can all keep moving forward.

/rant over, probably getting a bit deep for Macan forum
