Genuine question - why would you want to access the upper rev range while still remaining within the speed limit?? Surely this is just a waste of fuel?

Obviously for acceleration and overtaking but they would be lower gears or torque- I can’t access higher revs in higher gears while remaining within the speed limit in my hire car, so no genuine question…

For certain cars, the thrill of revving out the engine is something quite special, both in terms of noise and power. Some high performance Porsche engines red line at 9,000 rpm or thereabouts. My Carrera T has a lower red line, but where possible and safe, it is great to rev the engine close to its red line. :)

Agreed Simon but if you are red lining a 911 in any gear other than 1st you will be over the speed limit. My question was posed simply because the OP stated that the gearing prevented access to higher rev range in higher gears legally - I would have thought this obvious in any car with even normal gearing??

Because the whole purpose of owning 6cyl naturally aspirated boxer/cayman is what they sound like at high revs. When the boxer cayman moved for the 718 series to 4 cyl turbo engines, the major complaint was the loss of the six-cylinder sound.

And I am one who would not buy a sports exhaust in a Macan, but in a sports two-seater........ ;) ;) ;) ;)

Ok one last time… I’m clearly confusing people with my query…
If you red line a 3.0l turbo OR a 4.0 NA in third gear or above you are over the speed limit. Ergo, the slightly higher gearing in the 4.0l makes no difference in the real world as you will need a lower gear to get the drama and stay legal - or just floor it in a higher gear and get more drama but obviously over speed limit
So my query was why would slightly higher gearing make such a difference on the road? It’s a legitimate question, I’m not trying to be clever, I have never owned a 4.0 NA engine so am curious…

The issue is the 4 litre naturally aspirated 6 cyl is down on torque at lower revs compared with the turbo cars and the high gearing cuts relative performance at lower revs
