This week’s announcement of the 911 S/T got me thinking.
The S/T is priced from £231,600.
But the Carrera is from £97,000, the T from £105,700 & the S from £110,000.
So the Carrera (with PDK) is less than 42% of the cost of the S/T.
For road driving, the Carrera is all that most of us would really need, with 380bhp, 182mph top speed and a 0-62 of 4.2 seconds...
90% of the car for 42% of the price!

..... or even a Macan S with SC, giving 380PS, 161mph and 4.4 sec 0-60 with maybe £20K change?Wing Commander wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 5:38 pm This week’s announcement of the 911 S/T got me thinking.

Not sure I 'need' 182mph but yes, like your thinkingWing Commander wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 5:38 pm For road driving, the Carrera is all that most of us would really need, with 380bhp, 182mph top speed and a 0-62 of 4.2 seconds...

Absolutely, if you need the practicality of an SUV, or don’t want an iconic low-slung sports car.

The thing is WC will any of the S/T actually get on the road?
As you say a Carrara/T/S is all you need at least half the price!
The S/T will be a fab car but is a great marketing, profit making exercise for Porsche, PTS at £12.5k, Heritage pack £14k, normally I would say “ a fool and his money is easily parted” but anyone getting hold of one will end up making money

Col, you sparked something I've been thinking about for a while...
We have a 2.0 manual 718 Cayman which I'm currently driving every day as I'm in-between Macans (SD sold but new GTS not arriving until Dec).
The only Cayman anyone ever talks about or buys now is the 4.0 GTS, yet the 2.0 is absolutely fantastic to drive and more or less identical in every respect except the engine. No, it absolutely doesn't sound like a flat six but it still goes like stink, has massively accessible performance, handles better than I can describe and is even usable and comfortable day in, day out. Definitely a case of 90% of the car for (used) 50% or the price.

Agree 100% re 718, my wife’s Boxster is as quick as you need and great fun with it. The base Carrera is measured on a dyno at around 430bhp (Porsche understatement) in a car weighing 1,500kg and in my limited experience since Friday, is as quick and nimble as a car needs to be and is way more capable than my limits!NickP wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 9:11 pm Col, you sparked something I've been thinking about for a while...

Plus, I guarantee that to the “muggles” out there, a 911 is a 911 is a 911…

I think in general smaller cars also tend to feel quicker too. We’ve had many Minis and they always feel like you’re driving in a rocket
The afternoon that I had with the Carrera GTS felt quick even when doing 30.

Macan S MY 2023
Do you mean smaller or lower.
I remember having a test drive in an Evoque when I was used to a 3 series. I was so high up that felt slow. At least in the Macan one can select a relatively low driving position for an SUV. I often wonder the height of Range Rovers is the reason they always appear hard driven
