The new Porsche Macan, which is derived from the Indonesian word for 'tiger', according to Porsche's marketing department, will be a significant model in the company's growth strategy. The Macan will be an important model for the Indian market as well, and there is a possibility, albeit small, that the Macan might be assembled in India. The Audi Q5, on which the Macan is based, is already being assembled at Audi's Aurangabad facility, so there are certainly synergies to be had.
Bulk of the production will be spear-headed at Porsche's main facility in Leipzig, Germany, which has recently received a 500 million euro (Rs 350 crore) investment towards modernisation, including new production lines and paint shop. Porsche is bullish about the Macan, and believes its new 'baby' SUV will be able to emulate the success of the Cayenne. The Porsche Macan is expected to go into production sometime in 2013, with a likely premiere at the Frankfurt motor show.
