At one point you’re questioning whether you can do a count back of turns. And then say faffing about with this method “is nuts”. So what are you after???Macanboy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 10:36 pm The confusion here is folks think the ECU measures the motor running time and this figures out the pad thickness .
This has to be calibrated sure , typed into a manufacturer supplied hand held device plugged in .
But for risk of repeating myself VAG EBC brakes DOESN’ T work like this . Ferrari EBC do and need a dealer .
They ( VAG ) work on motor resistance shooting up as the current applied no longer turns the armature when it stops at either fully open or closed .The ECU shuts down the power when this R spike is detected .
So when say applying the “ hand brake “ you can keep your finger pulling the button in the UP position Ad infinity and the motor will stop once it reaches a stop .It can’t burn out .
It’ low pad thickness light is determined by the sensor communication with the ground when it contacts at 2-3 mm left .
This is completely different to timing the motor run time and needs zero in put by the tech ( or DIY er ) when fitting fresh pads .
There’s no need to phaff about removing the motor and winding back the motor with all the inherent forward risks of future water ingress .That’s nuts .

Last question, I'm going to try the 12v retraction method, so all I do when new pads are fitted is pump drakes a few times and activate handbrake lever a few time? Nothing else?

You leave the motor actuator alone .No need to “ phaff “ unbolting it risking a future water ingress fail @£650 ++. ….to get a socket / tool hex on the spindle to unwind it like your vid you posted .That’s nuts .TheTraveller wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 7:55 amAt one point you’re questioning whether you can do a count back of turns. You move the motor to unlock away from the piston by simply running it in situ . It turns both ways with 12 v that’s how it works . Just figure out which way opens it up .Once that’s done retract the piston in the usual way . There’s no counting back of turn s involved .

Read the comments .
I recommend doing it with the calliper still attached ,and old pads in situ .That way there’s zero risk of popping the piston out .
Then use a large lever ( carful not to score the disk ) to check the inner pads loose . You can even press harder and retract the piston fully obviating the need for retraction tool .
Which ever works best retraction wise .
Why peeps unbolt the motor and “ phaff “ on beats me .
Loadsa similar vids out there . It’s a VAG gift use it .

This is the confusing bit, he reapplies the 12v back on the motor when the new pads have been fitted until it locks the discs and stops, you say just pump the brake pedal and turn off/on the handbrake a few times??
Does both methods work?
Does both methods work?
Yes, they are basically the same, just a different source for the current.
