The luxury car tax which is payable for the first five years on cars costing £40,000 or more, has increased to £410 which combined with the standard tax of £190 equates to £600 from April 2024.

Good to see that the £40k threshold hasn't risen from its very realistic level whilst the charge has. Most £40k+ cars are super luxurious aren't they

Does the is apply to electric as well? Because if so, there’s an awful lot of bang average cars that are going to fall within the definition of “luxury”

EVs are exempt from the "luxury" surcharge at the moment, but this will change in April 2025.

Not too long before a Corsa EV will qualify for the ‘ luxury car tax’ 😳

I would like to see them rebrand the tax. Almost every mid-range car breaks £40k these days.

Being a bit trigger happy with options, I can get a 1.5 TSI Golf 'Style' to £40k quite easily.

And that's why they won't. More money.

Here's a question...

Macan S registered June 2019.
Luxury car supplement payable up to May 2025.
Bought used Sept 2023 when a year's tax paid to Aug 2024 (£570).
Renewal due Sept 2024 to Aug 2025 which involves part at £570, part at £600, and part at £190.
Changes at April 2025 (tax rate), June 2025 (end of supplement).
Q. Will DVLA work it all out and apportion correctly?

I do not think it works like that. I think they will ask you for the £600.

I renew with effect 1st April each year and in practice they asked me in early March £570 for another 12 months which I paid. Next I am expecting to pay £190 sometime in next March
