So, I left home with 20miles on the gauge. 8 miles later, it went to 0… or no further range left -/-. Got myself to the fuel station. Filled up.. exactly 75.1L.
So what’s going on? Was I really totally dry? Or is there a few litres ‘reserve’’ in the 75l tank? And why did the gauge go from 20 to 0 in 8 miles?
75L tank…odd experience
The range is an estimate based on how you’re driving etc. I’ve seen my range actually increase as I travel.
Eventually received March 2023.

As the range gets smaller the error margin increases. The range estimation is subject to many variables. Ambiant and engine temperature, speed and rate of acceleration etc. When cold consumption in my S falls to around 12mpg.

Sounds like you were lucky to make it. There probably is a small amount of ‘reserve’ but I think also some pessimism designed into the range feedback to give drivers a chance to make it to a filling station.

I gave a Boxster owner a lift once when he was stranded on the side of the road with 30 miles ‘to go’
Always told the kids to fill up when the light comes on at 50miles for this reason when they were taking it too literally

I recently got to a fuel station with a range of 28miles showing. The car took 71L so I doubt it would have made it to an indicated range of 0miles. The PCM was recommending Gulf and Sainsbury's as filling opportunities but I knew there was an Esso station within range so held out for Supreme. I normally fill up when the range is down to 100.
I don't know what range was showing on the OP's car when he shut it down at the end of the previous journey but starting from cold can produce a rapid fall off in indicated range for the first few miles.

Fill up sooner ideally, not good running them low like that.
If you boot it to the petrol station you're gonna use more than just poodling around of course, so it's constantly adjusting to driver style.

Lugging 30 kilos of extra fuel around all the time isn't cheap. If we overtake a bus on the way home, the missus gets out and catches it back with her bus pass. Saves around 25p I reckon.
