Direct Line reduced the cost of three cars insured with them recently. A pleasant surprise

My Admiral premium just dropped by 35%, which probably means I’ve been paying them too much for the last couple of years.

Insurance prices were reported to be dropping a month or so ago ; some of these premium rises are just most likely profiteering on the basis that people hear prices rising elsewhere so accept most rises without question. Shop around, make some calls, utilise any cashback offers to improve the deal etc

The new promise that insurers will now charge no more than new customers is just not true.

Had my renewal and up +18%. Did the usual comparison sites and direct quote checks and got much lower prices for like for like including the one I am with now. Telephoned this insurerer and they offered a "revised" price that is now +3% more and cheaper than any other quote. For both our cars it's now actually -4% less compared to last year at £23 less overall. Go figure!

On the question of insurance, FYI and possible interest . . . I sold my Macan S last October and I ordered a Tesla Model 3LR. I was paying about £350 a year for the Macan with Aviva (I say about because it was a 2 car polciy with the wife's SLC and the total was about £550). I picked up the Tesla 10 days back, the policy with Aviva had 3 months to run and they wanted an EXTRA £320 just for that remaining 3 monhs (making the cost for the Tesla for the year with Aviva at about £1,800). I shopped around and the cost for insuring the Tesla ranged from £350 to £2,250 with most being over £1,000 (Saga, Admiral, Direct Line all over £1,000). I went on the comparison sites again this wek under a different enail address and Aviiva came in at £700 !!.

This experience threw up lots of question of why (still unanswered) but the single most question is . . . when they all have access to the same data how can the price range from £350 to £2,250?

Just did new quote with my current insurer. Result is now a £47 reduction for both cars compared to last year's premium. Tel.to confirm and yes will "honour" the new quote.

A family member recently changed from a VW Tiguan 2.0d to a Hyundai Ioniq 5 BEV. Their insurance premium has increased by £821 pa rate!

Risk with BEV is significantly higher as they have a propensity to burst into flames after significant (and relatively insignificant) bumps that damage the battery integrity. Any BEV seems to be MUCH more expensive to insure than ICE

I can attest to the price hike for BEV...my partner is about to swap her Qashqai for a Hyundai Kona and the premium has shot up!

Mine, for my Taycan, didn't!
But then Direct Line did want a stupid excess of £5k so moved to Admiral...slightly higher premium (£30) but sensible excess

I then moved the Zoe onto the multi-car - no change in the Zoe's premium
I then put the Cayman R onto the policy - £120 extra...including my 30 year old son

No complaints here

About £800 pa for three cars, 2 of which are BEV's and one higher risk driver
