Final payment for car

Folks,

I've been asked by the OPC for payment before I pick up my Macan. I'm paying 'cash' ie no finance.

Now it's been a few years since I bought from a dealer but I'm sure in the past I usually paid on the day I collected after checking the car.

Comments appreciated.

I paid in ‘cash’ for my car and was asked to pay before collection so monies had cleared. This was in October with OPC Guildford.

I would not hand over a penny until having inspected it. In a week day you can get payment transferred almost immediately in this day and age so that’s not necessary.

I paid up front for my Boxster 2 days before collection in October on the basis that if there were any issues I'd refuse delivery until rectified. The car was perfect :)

I’m also paying cash and will be doing it direct from my current account on debit card on the day after checking the car, (good idea just to give the bank the heads up you are doing it before hand). The money clears immediately there and then.

Yes, always inspect the car carefully before paying. Debit card is quick and easy, although you may need to do it in chunks not exceeding £20K, depending on your bank.

Personally, even on this basis I wouldn’t do it, even if it meant inspecting one day and paying for then collecting 2 days later. Call me OCD, but I also take a paint thickness gauge ( which do work on aluminium btw ) to ensure there isn’t an area that measures bad. I once detected on a Mini that the bonnet was 4 times the paint thickness of the rest of the car only to discover it had been repaired post transit.

I paid by internet bank transfer in four slices in the three days before pick up due to bank limits on size of transfers. I found this far easier than going through the security checks necessary for a large debit card payment the previous time I bought a car. I paid a minimal amount on the first transfer to check everything working and the OPC had received it.

If car not up to scratch I would have relied on consumer protection legislation

I just pay on min advance anyway as it is one last thing to worry about or slow down the collection process

Debit card can be variably successful and as I’ve rarely part ex the prior car I’m paying the full amount. I’ve had the occasional with smaller amount bizarrely.

Perhaps I’ve always been lucky, I have no part ex either and never had a problem, but always give the bank the heads up day before on any large transactions.
